About 45 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta is one of the best natural habitat protection projects for military macaws (Ara militaris) in Mexico. High in the western Sierra Madre, the sanctuary is surrounded by a transition zone between deciduous pine-oak forest and tropical jungle. It was different from the other hikes because it includes a boat ride! I wasn't expecting that and it made the hike even more enjoyable. Curiel took us to two waterfalls. The first section of the hike was moderate, and from there to the second waterfall was very challenging.
