Palo María: the waterfall hike that earns your swim

Palo María is the closest real jungle hike to downtown Puerto Vallarta. You leave Federal Highway 200 toward the southeast of the Sierra Madre Occidental and, within minutes, the road turns into a trail among palm trees, papelillo trees and a river that runs down to the beaches of Bahía de Banderas.

What the route is like

It is 3.5 miles and takes around four hours, and we rate it challenging. The first stretch to the first waterfall is moderate. The way up to the second one is much steeper, with rocky sections and some places where a rope helps. Guests mention it in their reviews: be honest with Curiel about your fitness level before you decide to continue to the second waterfall, and the group adapts.

What you will see

  • Pools of transparent turquoise and emerald water for swimming.
  • Two waterfalls, the second one worth every step.
  • Birds, palms and the plants Curiel points out along the way.

Who it is for

People who like to sweat a little and want a real reward at the end. It is not a stroll, but you do not need to be an athlete. Groups are limited to ten people.

What to bring

Shoes with good grip are the number one tip from past guests. Add a swimsuit, a small towel, sunscreen, mosquito repellent and a small backpack. Water, snacks and shared transportation are included.

Palo María runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 10:00 AM, and other days can often be arranged on request.

Qué vas a ver
