Mismaloya: three waterfalls in one full day in the Sierra Madre

Mismaloya is the one we recommend when you want a whole day in the mountains. It is a full-day hike in the Sierra Madre Occidental, far from the noise of the city, and groups are limited to six people so the day feels personal.

The plan

  • Private transportation of about 40 minutes to the town of Las Juntas y Los Veranos.
  • Breakfast at a local restaurant to start with energy.
  • Hiking local roads and trails through subtropical vegetation: bromeliads, fruit trees, pines, orchids and ferns.
  • Following the river to three waterfalls, with time to swim and have a snack.
  • Rope climbing sections along the way.

How demanding is it

It covers 8 miles, and about 10 miles during the rainy season, and takes more than eight hours. We rate it medium to high, so it is best for people who hike regularly or are in good shape and want a challenge.

Why it is special

You see mountain scenery that most visitors never reach, plus birds and plants that Curiel helps you identify. The water is crystal clear and the swims are the reward after each stretch.

What to bring

Shoes with good grip are essential, plus a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen and a hat. Breakfast (gratuity not included), water with electrolytes, snacks and the guide are part of the tour.

Mismaloya runs on Mondays at 8:00 AM, with other dates available on request.
