El Nogalito: a river hike to the Fairy Portal

About 20 minutes from the Romantic Zone, El Nogalito sits in one of the best-preserved natural areas of Puerto Vallarta. The tour follows the river itself: you walk through the water, climb over enormous rocks and move between towering rock walls covered in vegetation.

The highlights

  • The Fairy Portal, a narrow opening in the rock that feels like a doorway into another place.
  • Natural pools where you can stop for a swim.
  • A waterfall at the end of the route.
  • Flora and fauna that Curiel helps you recognize, from butterflies to flowers.

Difficulty and time

It is only 1.9 miles and rated easy to medium, but the terrain is wet and rocky, so the day takes more than five hours at a relaxed pace with plenty of stops for photos. Groups go up to twelve people.

Why people love it

It is the most playful of our hikes. You get the jungle feeling, the river and the waterfall without a long, steep climb, which makes it a very good first experience.

What to bring

Shoes that can get wet and have good grip, a swimsuit, a small towel, sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Transportation from the meeting point, the entrance ticket to the river, water and snacks are included.

El Nogalito runs on Wednesdays at 10:00 AM, and other days can often be arranged on request.
